Our Vice-President wins Community Leadership Award!

Congratulations to our very own vice-president Om Kochar! Press release follows:

Mr. Om Kochar, Vice-President of the Silverwood Heights Community Association ist he Leadership Saskatoon, Community Leadership Award Recipient for 2011. Mr. Kochar will be presented the award at the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce’s SABEX Awards on May 18th, 2011.

Mr. Kochar’s contributions to community leadership in Saskatoon include being a past Board member of the Forum for Racialized Canadians. He worked as a Regional Coordinator for “Sense of Belonging” project by the United Nations Association Canada. He was a member of the Community Education and Action Committee for the City of Saskatoon and was also a Director of the Board of Child Find Saskatchewan. He had been a volunteer for Juvenile Diabetes and a volunteer for the Food Bank.

He was a member of India Canada Cultural Association and has volunteered at Folkfest, becoming President of the Association and Pavilion Manager of the India Pavilion. He was elected to the board of Directors of CFCR Saskatoon Community Radio.

He was an allocation panel member for United Way of Saskatoon & Area, and he has worked with the Open Door Society of Saskatoon.

He is presently a member of the Traffic Safety Committee for the City of Saskatoon and has been awarded the City of Saskatoon’s “Extraordinary in the Ordinary” award celebrating the city’s Cultural Diversity and Race Relations Committee. He has received the Volunteer Medal of Saskatchewan, Centennial Medal of Saskatchewan and was recognized by CTV for the Centennial of Saskatoon. In honour of his outstanding contribution to Saskatoon, a street in the Marquis Industrial Area was named Kochar Avenue.
